「2050 Carbon Neutrality」 will be implemented without delay
- The Office for Government Policy Coordination held the first Pan-Ministerial Task Force(T/F) meeting to implement the 「2050 Carbon Neutrality Promotion Strategy」 before the launch of the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission (tentative name), and in-depth discussion of the promotion strategy among related Ministries
- The Office expresses its wishes that this year will be a year to leap forward in advancing the ‘2050 carbon neutrality’ through the Government’s speedy advancement of the implementation tasks and close cooperation with industry, civil society and the public
□ The Office for Government Policy Coordination (hereinafter referred to as the Office for Government Policy Coordination) held the first Pan-Ministerial Task Force(T/F)* meeting presided by Koo Yun-cheol, Minister for Government Policy Coordination, in order to smoothly implement the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Promotion Strategy” (December 7, 2020).
* Participating Ministries: Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and ICT, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Employment and Labor, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Financial Services Commission, Forest Service, etc.
ㅇ At this meeting, the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenarios” establishment plan and the implementation tasks of the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Strategy” were reviewed, and publicity measures were discussed to raise public awareness of a carbon neutrality society.
ㅇ The 「2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenarios」including reduction plans for each sector is currently being prepared in the first half of this year (end of June), and the implementation tasks that can be carried out regardless of the Scenario, such as strengthening the institutional foundation, will be carried out soon within this period.
□ Koo Yun-cheol, Minister for Government Policy Coordination stressed the importance of establishing the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenarios” as soon as possible, as well as the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Promotion Strategy” without delay.
ㅇ In the process of implementing policies by departments, Minister Koo mentioned the need to form a consensus on “2050 carbon neutrality” through close cooperation and communication not only with the public, but also industry, civic and social groups, and experts, in addition to encouraging the participation and active involvement of all members of society.
ㅇ Particularly, Minister Koo mentioned, that “with the government’s efforts, we hope that we will be able to take a big leap forward towards achieving ‘2050 carbon neutrality’ this year by promoting various campaigns (non-face-to-face) in which people can easily participate.”
□ The Office of Government Policy Coordination has formed a separate preparatory group with the goal of the '2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission' (tentative name) and the early launch of the Secretariat (first quarter) and is in the process of amending relevant laws and regulations.
ㅇ Until the official launch of the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission, we plan to review the progress made every month, focusing on operating the ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Promotion Pan-Ministerial Task Force’, and closely
communicate and collaborate with relevant Ministries.
