「2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission」 held a debate with the general public to establish “Carbon Neutrality Blueprint”
500 citizens participated in the Citizens’Council on Carbon Neutrality Great Debate (September 11~12)

- Carried out ▵Discussion, ▵Q&A, ▵Citizen group survey on issues of carbon neutrality Scenarios, coal-fired power generation, and eco-friendly vehicles
- Based on the survey results of the citizen groups, the ‘Carbon Neutrality Scenarios’ will be finalized at the end of October after collecting the opinions through the Citizens’ Council on Carbon Neutrality

 

□ The 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Carbon Neutrality Commission, Co-Chairperson Yun Sun-Jin), an initiative promoted by the President, will hold the  from September 11 to 12 at the Ferrum Tower in Euljiro, Seoul, with 500 citizens attending on-line.


ㅇ The 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission plans to broadcast the Great Debate live* on the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission YouTube channel, and the debate will be made available to the general public.

ㅇ The result of this great debate will be reflected in the 'final draft of the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenarios' to be confirmed at the end of October along with collected opinions of various Consultation Bodies (▵civil society, ▵religion, ▵youths, ▵education, ▵labor, ▵agriculture, ▵fisheries, ▵industry, etc.).  These highlights are currently being compiled by the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission.


□ For two days, 500 citizens will listen to expert presentations on 8 topics related to the carbon neutrality, and will participate in round-the-clock discussions and Q&A sessions on 6 issues. 


ㅇ Particularly, citizens can ask questions on-line regarding the future vision including ‣Improving the national power mix, such as a phased reduction in coal-fired power generation, ‣Transitioning from internal combustion vehicles into eco-friendly vehicles, ‣Reducing waste such as plastics and increase recycling rates and ‣Pushing forward a just economic and social transformation towards a carbon-neutral society, in addition to policy efforts to promote the transition into a carbon-neutral society, exchange opinions, and suggest policies.


ㅇ The participating citizens' group was randomly selected from men and women aged 15 and over nationwide throughout July. The participants completed the three-step curriculum of the basic concept of carbon neutrality-general and intensive course through the launching ceremony (August 7), e-learning (August 9 to September 10), and citizens’ carbon classroom (August 28). The great debate was the last of the four stages, and the opinions of 500 citizens were collected.

 

□ Following the first survey (launching ceremony) and the second survey (citizens’ carbon classroom), the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission will conduct two more surveys before and after this Citizens’ great debate.


ㅇ The survey results of the citizens' group will be reflected in the final draft of the government's carbon neutrality Scenario along with the opinions collected by the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission from various consultation bodies including civil society, religious circles, labor circles, and livestock and fisheries circles.


□ “Carbon neutrality is a revolutionary transformation in which the three major actors of the national economy, - the government, corporations, and the people – will participate in the transformation of Korea’s institutions (system), production (energy), and consumption (lifestyle) trends,” said Co-Chairperson Yun Sun-Jin, emphasizing the importance of strengthening actions for carbon neutrality.


ㅇ Co-Chairperson Yun added that, “what we need to do from now on is to think about how to minimize the economic impact of the great energy transition and how to bring together industry, the environment, and the general public into a harmonized vision.”
