※ The UK Climate Change Committee(CCC) is an independent organization that was established in accordance with the UK Climate Change Act in 2008 and performs critical functions including ▵ providing climate change policy advice to the UK Government and, ▵ monitoring and evaluating the implementation status of climate policies.
ㅇ The UK is the host country of the 26th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (UNFCCC COP26) scheduled to be held in November. The UK is also an international leader in climate change cooperation and has enacted carbon neutrality into its legal framework. The UK CCC highlighted that they hope that Korea will become a role model for the promotion of carbon-neutrality cooperation in the Asia Pacific region.

ㅇ Yun Sun-Jin, Co-Chairperson of the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission, said that '2050 carbon neutrality' is the only path for sustainable development of future generations, improvement of quality of life, and promoting eco-friendly growth. Additionally, she emphasized that Korea would actively participate in international climate change reponse cooperation, by proceeding with the ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality’ policy initiatives.
□ In May of this year, the UK Climate Change Committee(CCC) led the establishment of the International Climate Councils Network (ICCN), a consultative body between international climate Commissions and Committees jointly with Sweden and Chile, and held a total of two video conferences (The first meeting in May 2021 and the second in September 2021), and the 「2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission」joined the
International Climate Councils Network (ICCN) in September of this year at the request of the UK Climate Change Committee(CCC).
ㅇ In relation to the aforementioned, the UK Climate Change Committee(CCC) declared that it is encouraging to see Korea establishing the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission after announcing its carbon neutrality goal, and requested to join the ICCN immediately after the launch of the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission. The UK CCC also mentioned that it is encouraging that the 「2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission」
plans to strengthen communication and cooperation at all times by participating in various video conferences of the 'International Climate Councils Network (ICCN)'.
□ Additionally, in today's video-conference, the two sides said that the 26th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP26) should serve as an opportunity to strengthen the international community's cooperation in climate change response and to mobilize each country's will for green recovery, and agreed to continue to work together to make COP26 a success.
ㅇ Yun Sun-Jin, Co-Chairperson of the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission” indicated that the “2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission” has been currently conducting the 2030 NDC review, and recognized the UK’s contribution to enhancing international climate cooperation as the host of the UNFCCC COP26.
ㅇ Accordingly, the UK Climate Change Committee(CCC) explained that since its establishment in 2008, it has played advisory and monitoring roles to the UK government in various sectors such as ▵ greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions reduction and ▵ climate change adaptation, and
said that they expected that there is still much room for improvement in global climate cooperation and suggested a continuously strengthened cooperation.
□ The 「2050 Carbon Neutrality Commission」plans to continue its efforts to strengthen cooperation in global climate change response by establishing regular communication channels and holding video conferences with the climate Commissions and Committees of each country, including the UK Climate Change Committee (CCC), to strengthen international carbon neutrality cooperation.
