Cho Su-hye is on the project planning team of Mubeat, a K-pop voting app and website, handling the site's livestreams and social media marketing. She also runs the YouTube channel "Seoulsoul," through which she shares her experiences in the K-pop industry.
In an online interview via Zoom, Cho shared her experiences in the sector. A fan of K-pop since childhood, she said getting a job at Mubeat was a dream come true.
She said she was initially excited over one of her tasks: monitoring K-pop videos. Watching such videos at work, however, eventually got old after a year in the industry, she said, adding that her job is like any other except that it's related to K-pop.
"In the beginning, I really loved my job and my team. Everything was so new and fun," she said. "But it's just an office job. In the end, it's a 9-6 job."
Cho said she needs to be extra careful when posting a video clip or photo because one mistake can trigger K-pop fans. Such a situation arose in her second month on the job. She said her phone one day woke her up at 6 a.m. as numerous texts from fans indicted a mistake and their notifications tagged Mubeat on Twitter.
Another major duty for Cho is supervising livestreams. In the beginning, she said, live broadcasts were a pilot program done by two people, she and a co-worker, but the number of viewers has since shot up from under 100 to thousands worldwide. The livestreams went from Mubeat struggling to get acts to appear to the groups' management agencies begging to put them on. Cho said this result was one of the most rewarding experiences of her job.
