The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 1 said United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi has thanked the Korean government for its pledge of USD 10 million (KRW 12 billion) worth of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

The U.N. official on Feb. 28 sent a message of thanks for the aid to Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jongmoon, who was in Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament.

Seoul pledged USD 10 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Ukraine to help the nation's severe crisis due to invasion by Russia.

The ministry on Feb. 28 said the decision seeks to help the Ukrainian government, people and refugees.

"The humanitarian assistance will be delivered promptly after consultations with the Ukrainian government and its neighboring countries as well as international organizations," it said.

"With the hope that the assistance will help relieve the suffering of Ukrainians, the Korean government will continue actively contributing to resolving the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine."

The UNHCR predicted that the Russian invasion of Ukraine would cause over four million Ukrainians to flee to neighboring countries like Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
