President Moon Jae-in, who is visiting New York to attend the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, met with British Prime Minister Theresa May. As a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, the United Kingdom has carried out an active role in adopting and implementing Security Council resolutions related to the North Korean issue. Notably, Prime Minister May, herself, announced a statement denouncing North Korea for its sixth nuclear test. She said that North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats loomed large as a menace not only to Northeast Asia but the rest of the world, calling for the international community to unite in responding to it.
At today’s summit, the two leaders agreed that the Security Council should continue to play a pivotal role in responding resolutely to any North Korean provocation. They also reached an agreement to keep close bilateral cooperation and communication channels open so that the North Korean nuclear issue could be resolved peacefully as soon as possible in a fundamental and comprehensive manner.
With this summit meeting today, President Moon has completed meetings with all the heads of state or government of the five permanent members of the Security Council. A firmer foundation for cooperation with the Security Council has been laid on the basis of the trust developed with the leaders in responding to the North Korean nuclear issue and striving to settle peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Sharing a common understanding that job creation and expansion of growth engines were crucial, the two leaders decided to continue advancing cooperation so that bilateral trade and investments could be expanded regardless of Brexit.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, including finance, science and technology, and the defense industry. They also concurred on the need to cooperate to make sure that the many events to be held in marking the 2017-2018 Korea-U.K. Year would greatly contribute to the promotion of people-to-people exchanges and friendships.
Noting that Princess Anne, a member of the IOC and the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, is expected to come to Korea on the occasion of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, President Moon expressed the hope that many British people would visit Korea, along with the Princess, and participate in the efforts to promote peace and harmony in the international community through sports.
