President Moon Jae-in, who is on a state visit to China, attended a luncheon hosted by Communist Party Secretary of Chongqing Chen Min`er today. During their meeting, they reached an agreement to resume a project to restore a site used by the Korean Liberation Army as its general headquarters, one of the historic sites of the Korean independence movement in Chongqing.
President Moon said that the Mayor of Chongqing Zhang Guoqing promised the prompt restoration of the general headquarters. The President went on to say that Korea, too, would work with all its heart to advance relations between the two sides.
The restoration of the site of the general headquarters of the Korean Liberation Army was agreed upon by the previous Administration, but it has been suspended because of the THAAD issue. During the summit on the 14th, President Moon requested President Xi`s interest in restoring the site.
The Communist Party Secretary said that he would play a special role in promoting friendly cooperation between Korea and China. He continued to promise that research would be conducted on the preservation of the historic sites of the Korean independence movement in Chongqing and that enhanced support would be provided for Korean businesses to make investments in the city.
President Moon said when Korean independent activists were moving around China, they received a lot of help from the citizens of Chongqing, and the support of the citizens made Korea’s independence movement possible. The President went on to say that Koreans who made an endeavor to regain the country’s independence and the Chinese who strived to protect their country came together with one heart, which led to the creation of the inseparable bond of today.
The members of the Korean delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Kim Dong-yeon; Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-hwa; Korean Ambassador to China Noh Young-min; Director of National Security Chung Eui-yong; Second Deputy Director of National Security Nam Gwan-pyo; Senior Secretary to the President for Public Communication Yoon Young-chan; Senior Secretary to the President for Economic Affairs Hong Jang-pyo; and special delegates. Among the attendees from the Chinese side were Chongqing Mayor Zhang Guoqing; Chinese Ambassador to Korea Qiu Guohong; Deputy Communist Party Secretary of Chongqing Tang Liangzhi; Secretary-General of Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party Wang Xiangang; and Deputy Mayor of Chongqing Liu Guiping.
