President Moon Jae-in spoke on the phone with U.S. President Donald Trump for 30 minutes tonight. The Korean President briefed his U.S. counterpart on the results of the high-level inter-Korean talks. The two Presidents agreed to further reinforce Korea-U.S. cooperation.

Going beyond North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the two heads of state saw the possibility of inter-Korean dialogue taking a natural course to U.S.-North Korea talks for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. They agreed to have close consultations on the progress of South-North Korea talks going forward.

President Trump expressed his openness to holding talks between the United States and North Korea at the appropriate time, under the right circumstances.

Speaking of the Wall Street Journal’s recent report that he was mulling the possibility of launching a military strike against North Korea, President Trump said it was not true at all. The U.S. President said that it should be made clearly known that while there were inter-Korean talks going on, there would be no military actions taken by the United States. 

President Moon noted that President Trump’s unyielding principle and cooperation made possible the outcomes of the high-level talks between the two Koreas. Then, the two leaders concurred on the need to maintain a firm stance to make the talks successful.

President Trump also said that Vice President Mike Pence would lead the U.S delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
