President Moon Jae-in attended the opening ceremony of the 132nd Session of the International Olympic Committee. The annual IOC Session is the premier decision-making apparatus of the Committee. In a year when there is an Olympic Games, the IOC Session is held in the host country.
Prior to the opening of the IOC Session, President Moon attended an official reception to welcome the members of the IOC. The event was attended by some 200 figures, including IOC President Thomas Bach, IOC members, honorary members and their spouses.
Traditionally for this kind of event, IOC members come up to the podium one by one to greet the head of state and government of an Olympic host nation. At today’s reception, however, President Moon stepped down from the stage and met with each and every IOC member on the floor with a warm welcome.
President Moon presented a hand-carved seal named "Promise of Peace" to IOC President Bach, who has shown ceaseless support for and trust in the holding of the PyeongChang Olympics as an Olympics of peace. Engraved on the front with noted mountains traversing the Korean Peninsula from Baekdusan Mountain to Hallasan Mountain, the seal is designed to represent the promising start of a globally-backed peace Olympics and the resolution to make the Games a success.
Following the reception for the IOC members, President Moon and First Lady Kim Jung-sook attended the opening ceremony of the IOC Session to extend congratulations in accordance with an IOC tradition.
The opening ceremony was attended by over 800 people, including members of the IOC, those who are affiliated with the International Federation (IF) and personnel from the organizing committee of the next Olympics as well as domestic guests.
Through his remarks at the opening of the Session, President Moon expressed his expectation that the dream and promise of PyeongChang would be realized thanks to the trust and support of the IOC. In addition, the President wholeheartedly expressed his gratitude to IOC President Bach and other members of the IOC for extending deep trust and assistance for Korea’s endeavor to make the PyeongChang Olympics an Olympics of peace.
The cultural performances held after President Moon’s remarks, combining the elements of traditional culture and modern technology, received an enthusiastic response.
