President Moon Jae-in and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte held a summit in PyeongChang for 30 minutes from 4:30 this afternoon. The Dutch Prime Minister is visiting Korea to attend the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games. The two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, including the direction of future developments in Korea-Netherlands relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
President Moon expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Rutte for coming to Korea together with Dutch King Willem-Alexander and many other royal family members to add something special to the PyeongChang Olympics. The President also wished Team Netherlands, a speed skating powerhouse, the best of luck at the Games as well.
Recalling the special connection between the Netherlands and Gangwon-do Province, where the PyeongChang Olympics is to be held, which had been safeguarded by many Dutch soldiers during the 1950-53 Korean War, the two leaders expressed their shared understanding that the special affinity and trust forged by the participation of the Netherlands in the Korean War was serving as a strong buttress in relations between the two nations.
President Moon said that the Olympics was being held at the height of tensions surrounding the Korean Peninsula, adding that he looked forward to a peace Olympics through which North Korea could return to dialogue for the resolution of the nuclear issue. The President requested the Netherlands` support to keep the newly created momentum going even after the close of the Games.
Prime Minister Rutte replied that the Netherlands would not spare any support, especially on issues regarding sanctions, as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and the current chair country of the United Nations Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea.
The two leaders agreed to expand collaboration in recognition of the large potential for bilateral cooperation on big data in preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, support for startup companies, high-tech farming, and eco-friendly industries, including wind power generation.
