On the second day of his state visit to Vietnam, President Moon Jae-in visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and laid a wreath at his tomb. The Mausoleum is located in the center of Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi where President Ho Chi Minh, who is held in high esteem as the founding father of Vietnam, proclaimed the declaration of independence.
President Ho Chi Minh led the independence movement when Vietnam was under the colonial rule of France and Japan. After that, he devoted his life to the cause of the unification of Vietnam. Even though he was the paramount leader, he lived in a small stilt house by the Presidential Palace, practicing a life of integrity and frugality. Because of his humane character, he was called “Uncle Ho” by the children, and he is still revered by the Vietnamese people to date.
Following the Korea-Vietnam Summit, President Moon visited the Ho Chi Minh Stilt House together with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang.
After living in the Presidential Palace for only three months in 1954, President Ho Chi Minh moved to a nearby house where an electrician had once lived during the French colonization of Vietnam. When he moved out, he said that the Palace was too much for him. When a new wooden house was completed in 1958, he moved to the new residence and lived there till he passed away in 1969. Displayed in the two-room house were a wooden desk, a bed, books and a clock that were actually used by the humble, commoner-like "Uncle Ho."
After arriving at the residence, President Moon said that President Ho Chi Minh`s greatest aspect was revealed in his residence, adding that he led a truly frugal life. He continued to say that the people in Vietnam respected him from deep in their hearts because he actually lived among them. Noting that President Ho Chi Minh is a great figure not only to the people of Vietnam but to all human beings, President Moon said that he would take to heart what President Ho Chi Minh`s residence signifies.
President Moon said if politicians around the world would follow the example of President Ho Chi Minh, there would be no more corruption, adding that he felt solemn after looking at how he had lived.
President Quang explained about a radio, a hat and a fan President Ho Chi Minh once used and the type of flower he liked as they moved to a bedroom. Noting that President Ho Chi Minh had a poor but honest life, President Moon said he loved flowers and carp and, thus, was spiritually rich.
President Moon and President Quang fed the carp, which President Ho Chi Minh himself used to keep in a pond located in front of his residence.
President Moon also sat at a table where President Ho Chi Minh used to sit. The President said it was a great honor to sit where he had sat. The President wrote on the guestbook that he was deeply impressed by his love for the people with whom he lived, ate and worked.
