President Moon Jae-in met with President of the Work Bank Group Jim Yong Kim at Cheong Wa Dae at 11:00 this morning.
President Moon began by thanking him for attending the African Development Bank Group Annual Meetings held in Busan May 21-25, which were co-hosted by the Korean Government and the African Development Bank under the theme "Accelerating Africa's Industrialization."
At today’s meeting, President Moon unveiled Korea’s intent to make more active contributions to the economic advancement of Africa. He also clarified Korea’s commitment to sharing its experience and actively working together with Africa especially in the field of investment in people, which has been highlighted by the Work Bank President.
Expressing his agreement on the World Bank President's mid- to long-term visions to expand the role of the World Bank, President Moon said Korea would provide active support.
In reply, the World Bank President congratulated President Moon on exerting global leadership in dealing with various political issues that have an important bearing on all humanity. He next explained that the World Bank's total lending capacity significantly increased through capital increases to about US$100 billion from the approximate US$35 billion in 2012 when he was appointed as the President of the organization. In this connection, he expressed his appreciation for the active assistance the Korean Government has so far provided.
President Kim said what was most interesting when attending the Annual Meetings in Busan was that all the African nations intended to follow in the footsteps of Korea for their economic development. He said he concentrated on helping them clearly understand what was required.
In addition, the World Bank President mentioned that Korea was ranked high on the human resource development index based on effective investment in people, which was released by the World Bank Group. He added that he gave a high evaluation to the fact that Korea heavily stressed investment in people more than anything else.
Then, President Kim thanked President Moon for actively supporting the World Bank Group branch in Seoul. He added that the branch office in Korea was playing a very significant role in helping many countries truly understand the Miracle on the Han River.
