President Moon Jae-in will make a state visit to Russia June 21-23 at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin.
During his three-day visit, President Moon will hold a summit with President Putin and attend a state dinner. The two heads of state are expected to reaffirm their commitment to the promotion of forward-looking Korea-Russia relations.
Based on this, the two leaders are anticipated to discuss how to enhance substantive bilateral cooperation, including the development of future growth engines. At the same time, their discussion will focus on how to link bilateral collaboration with the common prosperity and advancement of the Eurasian continent going beyond Northeast Asia. They will also consult with each other on the denuclearization of North Korea and the settlement of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In addition, President Moon is scheduled to meet with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and other leading figures. The President will also meet with some members of the Korean community in Russia and several Russian people to compliment them on their contributions to the development of the relations between the two nations.
During his state visit, President Moon will address the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, becoming the first South Korean President to do so.
The President will then move to Rostov-on-Don, a city in southern Russia, where there will be a World Cup soccer match between Korea and Mexico. He will cheer for Korea's national soccer team and give encouraging remarks to the players.
This will be the first state visit to Russia by a Korean President in the 19 years since President Kim Dae-jung’s visit in 1999. President Moon will have his third bilateral summit with President Putin this time.
The summit is expected to further solidify friendship and trust between the two leaders. Building upon this, it is expected to become an opportunity to expand substantive cooperation with Russia, a key partner in Korea’s New Northern Policy, and strengthen strategic communication and collaboration between the two countries in the process of bringing peace to the Korean Peninsula.
