President Moon Jae-in is scheduled to make a state visit to Russia June 21-24 at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin.

Major events on the itinerary of his state visit in Moscow include a summit and a state dinner with President Putin, a meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, an address at the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, and the attendance at the Korea-Russia friendship and goodwill night and the Korea-Russia business forum. Afterward, the President will travel to Rostov-on-Don, in which the Korea-Mexico World Cup soccer match is scheduled, to root for the Korean national football squad.

Over the past year since the Moon Jae-in Administration was launched, the heads of state of Korea and Russia have held two summits on the sidelines of multilateral summit meetings and three telephone conversations. This will be their third summit and the first state visit to Russia by a Korean President in 19 years since President Kim Dae-jung’s visit in 1999. The summit is expected to further solidify friendship and trust between the two leaders and become an important milestone to promote the forward-looking development of strategic cooperation and partnership between the two countries. 

The visit is taking place at a time when the security environment with the anticipated denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the settlement of peace is undergoing positive changes. It is also expected to become an opportunity for the two nations, as partners for cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in the Eurasian Continent, to further strengthen strategic communication and cooperation as a way to promote peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia and substantive collaboration between the two countries.
