As the first event of his state visit to Russia, President Moon Jae-in made an address at the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, after meeting with Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. He is the first Korean President to address the assembly.
In his address, President Moon said he regarded "Korea-Russia cooperation as the cornerstone of peace on the Korean Peninsula and prosperity in Northeast Asia..." The President next gave detailed explanations on how to enhance cooperation between the two countries; expanding the future growth engines to provide job opportunities in the two countries and cement the foundation for sustainable growth; pursuing the nine-bridge strategy aimed at strengthening cooperation in nine key areas of shipbuilding, port construction, the Northern Sea Route development, gas exploration, railway construction, power generation, job creation, the farming industry and the fishing industry, and strengthening the foundation for the promotion of exchanges to enhance the welfare of the people, which aims to raise the quality of life.
At 3:30 in the afternoon, President Moon met with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at the Russian Government Headquarters. It was their second meeting. They first met in Manila, the Philippines, on November 14, 2017, on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit. President Moon and Prime Minister Medvedev had a common understanding that the bilateral relationship had been advancing stably based on active summit diplomacy last year and took note of the concrete results in the development of the two countries’ relationship, including recent increases in bilateral trade and people-to-people exchanges.
