President Moon Jae-in was honored with the Gold Olympic Order by the International Olympic Committee today. IOC President Thomas Bach presented the Order to President Moon at Cheong Wa Dae.
The Olympic Order was established in 1975 by the IOC. Gold, Silver and Bronze orders have been bestowed on those who devoted themselves to the Olympic Movement. President Kim Young-sam (1993), President Kim Dae-jung (1998) and President Lee Myung-bak (2013) were also awarded the Gold Olympic Order.
President Moon and IOC President Bach spoke together after the ceremony. Likening the IOC President to a lifelong friend from childhood, President Moon explained that during their first meeting to discuss the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, they came to a complete mutual agreement to make the PyeongChang event a peace Olympics by having North Korea participate in the Games.
President Moon went on to say that IOC President Bach had approved the formation of an inter-Korean joint team and the joint march under the Korean Unification Flag and had made it possible to allocate additional quotas so North Korean athletes could take part. The President said that the PyeongChang Winter Olympics could become a peace Olympics thanks to such efforts by IOC President Bach and that its success has been carried over into the ongoing Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, thereby enabling sports to greatly help improve inter-Korean relations. In this connection, the President expressed his appreciation to IOC President Bach.
IOC President Bach began by saying he came to Korea to express his gratitude to President Moon for his considerable cooperation in preparing for and hosting the PyeongChang Olympic Games and making it a historic success. He went on to say that he vividly remembered that, in the beginning, the discussion had focused on whether it was possible to persuade North Korea to participate in the Olympics, rather than whether it would take part in the Olympics. He congratulated President Moon by saying the Korean President fully deserved the Order.
