President Moon Jae-in will attend the G20 Summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Hamburg, Germany. Ahead of the Summit, President Moon will pay an official visit to Germany July 5-6 at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
During his official visit, President Moon will hold separate meetings with Chancellor Merkel and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin. They are expected to have extensive discussions on a wide range of issues, including how to further promote friendly relations between Korea and Germany, how to work together to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula, how to cooperate on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and job creation and how to coordinate policies to address pending global issues such as support for the free trade system and climate change responses.
In addition, President Moon will meet with members of the local Korean community and a surviving member of the German medical support group sent to Busan after the outbreak of the Korean War as well as descendants of other members. The President was also invited to address the Körber Foundation.
The upcoming visit to Germany will be President Moon`s second overseas trip since taking office following a visit to the United States. The visit is expected to serve as an opportunity to enhance mutual trust and bonds with Chancellor Merkel, who advocates such universal values as democracy and human rights as well as shares a similar philosophy on the administration of state affairs. On top of this, it will go a long way toward substantively developing relations between the two nations.
For two days starting July 7, the President will attend the G20 Summit to be held in Hamburg under the theme of "Shaping an Interconnected World." He will engage in discussions with other participating heads of state and government concerning how to achieve G20 policy coordination for strong, sustainable and balanced inclusive growth.
This is the first multilateral summit to be attended by President Moon since his inauguration. At the G20 Summit, the top consultative body for international economic cooperation, the President will have opportunities to introduce the new Administration’s core economic policies from job creation and social cohesion to the nurturing of the eco-friendly energy industry and the furthering of the empowerment of women, among others.
At the G20 Summit, the President also intends to contribute to solidifying the global partnership by actively participating in the endeavors to tackle pending issues related to the global economy, such as supporting free trade and climate change responses.
On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, bilateral summits with heads of state and government of major countries, including China, Japan and Russia, are being arranged. President Moon will work to develop friendship with other leaders through the summits, and building upon that, he plans to actively engage in summit diplomacy to help secure the basis for close policy cooperation at the top level as well as to promote a friendly and cooperative relationship in the years to come.
