President Meets with Russian Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko
This afternoon at Cheong Wa Dae, President Moon Jae-in met with Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council (Russia’s upper house of parliament). She is visiting Korea at the official invitation of the National Assembly. During their 55-minute meeting that began at 2:00 pm, they discussed how to promote friendly relations and parliamentary exchanges between the two countries as well as recent developments on the Korean Peninsula.
President Moon noted that cooperation between the two nations is being strengthened in various sectors. These include exchanges between top government officials such as his successful state visit to Russia in June and Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon's attendance at the Eastern Economic Forum last month where he also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Other areas include trade and people-to-people exchanges and strategic communication related to denuclearization and the settlement of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In particular, President Moon said that active inter-parliamentary exchanges between the two nations were making significant contributions to the advancement of bilateral relations, and he expressed his appreciation for the Russian parliament's cooperation in enabling him to address the State Duma, Russia's lower house, during his state visit.
Chairwoman Matviyenko remarked that President Moon's state visit to Russia last June greatly contributed to enhancing Korea-Russia ties. Conveying President Putin's regards to President Moon and his acceptance of the invitation to visit Korea, the Chairwoman said she looked forward to the two nations holding diplomatic consultations to enable President Putin to visit Korea in the near future.
President Moon expounded on his Administration's efforts to realize the vision of a Korean Peninsula free from war, nuclear weapons and nuclear threats by working to achieve complete denuclearization and the settlement of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula during his third inter-Korean summit held in Pyeongyang last month. The President requested Russia's continued support and roles to that end.
Chairwoman Matviyenko said she fully stood behind the results of the inter-Korean summit, stressing that the Russian Government and the Federation Council would continue to support an improvement in inter-Korean relations and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula going forward. The Chairwoman went on to say that, in particular, when she visited North Korea last month, she was able to confirm its determination for denuclearization in a meeting with Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission on September 8. She added that Russia would play a necessary role so that North Korea’s denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula could be realized.
If the East Asian Railroad Community initiative proposed by President Moon materialized, along with trilateral cooperation among the two Koreas and Russia, Chairwoman Matviyenko said she is certain that it will contribute to peace and prosperity not only in South Korea and Russia but beyond Northeast Asia and throughout all of Eurasia. The Chairwoman expressed her full support for the initiative.
