President Moon Jae-in and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, held a summit at Cheong Wa Dae today. At the summit, Qatari Minister of Energy Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi unveiled his country’s plan to order 60 LNG carriers.
The Energy Minister said that a Qatari delegation had recently been dispatched to Korea to study the possibility of adding 60 new LNG tankers to Qatar’s existing fleet of 50 carriers.
Minister Saad added that he anticipated good mutual ties with the introduction of Korean-built LNG carriers, given the country’s rich shipbuilding experience and the established reputation of its technologies.
The Qatari side mentioned LNG carriers while President Moon referred to LNG-fueled vessels. However, the basic principles applied to the two different types of vessels are the same in terms of the LNG compression technology for storage.
At the summit, President Moon said, “Korea and Qatar are both situated on a peninsula and thus the shipping industry is very important. The two countries’ common shipping and harbor foundation can lead to mutual development. The shipping industry is recently undergoing a transition to eco-friendlier vessels due to maritime and air pollution. This transition to liquefied natural gas-powered vessels will help expand demand for LNG.”
