President Moon Jae-in spoke on the phone with U.S. President Donald Trump for 25 minutes from 6:50 p.m. today. The two Presidents shared the key results and evaluations of the second North Korea-United States summit, which was held in Hanoi, Vietnam. They also discussed in detail how South Korea and the United States could work together on follow-up measures.
President Moon noted the fact that President Trump and Chairman Kim had met for the second time, following their first summit in Singapore, and engaged in long, in-depth discussions to achieve the common goal of denuclearization and the settlement of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. President Moon added that he looked forward to productive results at follow-up consultations between the U.S. and North Korean leaders as the two have reaffirmed their respective positions in person and discussed concrete issues.
Noting that he wanted to share the summit results with President Moon first and hear his opinion, President Trump gave a detailed account of what was discussed during the summit.
In reply, President Moon said he looked forward to President Trump's abiding commitment and determination to accomplish the historic task of ushering in a new era of peace by ending the age of conflict and confrontation fueled by the world's last remaining Cold War rivalry on the Korean Peninsula. The President added that the Korean Government would play any role necessary and provide assistance under close coordination with the United States.
President Trump made himself clear that he is committed to seeking a settlement through dialogues with North Korea going forward while expressing his feelings over not being able to reach an agreement at this summit. In addition, President Trump asked President Moon to play an active role as a mediator by conversing with Chairman Kim Jong Un and later informing him about the results of those conversations. President Trump went on to say that they should closely cooperate to ensure that North Korea would implement denuclearization in a practical manner.
President Moon suggested that he and President Trump meet in person and continue more in-depth discussions in the near future. President Trump concurred and proposed that the details be discussed through diplomatic channels.
