President Moon Jae-in met with the CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, for a 45 minute-conversation at Cheong Wa Dae from 4:00 p.m. today. The President agreed to the meeting after the Twitter CEO had sent a request in late January expressing his hope to meet with the President during his scheduled visit to Korea in March.
CEO Jack Dorsey began by thanking President Moon for having his own Twitter account. He went on to say that the sincerity President Moon conveys as an ordinary individual has impressed him, adding that the President’s example is worth being emulated by other heads of state and government. He added that his company is highly interested in digital leadership, digital government and open communication and that President Moon has set a good example for them.
President Moon responded by saying, “Cheong Wa Dae and the Government, including myself, are communicating with the public through Twitter and other social media.” The President went on to explain that his Administration strives to communicate through an online public petition system because everyday participation in politics by sovereign people makes democracy healthier. The President asked the Twitter CEO about the inspiration behind Twitter, which has become an important and everyday means of communication for average people.
Noting that tomorrow marks Twitter’s 13th birthday, CEO Dorsey said that, as a child, he had great interest in maps and researched how cities operated, ultimately finding that what mattered was people. Saying that people have responded well to the app he developed to send messages via mobile phone, the CEO added that participation by many people has enabled the growth of Twitter.
President Moon said, "I think innovation is about bringing out a desire in people and commercializing it. Korea is also making efforts to create future growth engines and job opportunities through innovative startups. If you have any advice for innovative startups and something to say to young people who are taking on the challenge of founding an innovative business, I hope you share it with us."

Noting that one strength of Silicon Valley is its structure that helps everyone learn, he added that taking on a new challenge in such a structure could lead to huge success.
