President Moon Jae-in met a delegation from the Russian Federation led by Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council, from 5pm to 5:45pm on April 25th. President Moon assessed that the Russia-DPRK summit which took place today will constructively contribute to the complete denuclearization and establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. The President also expressed his gratitude for President Putin’s firm resolve and active efforts towards resolving the Korean Peninsula issue through political and diplomatic means.
President Moon said, “I would like to meet President Putin on the occasion of the G20 Summit to be held in Osaka this June, and hope that he will visit the ROK at the earliest possible time.” He also added, “I hope today’s Russia-DPRK summit will serve as a foundation for the early resumption of US-DPRK dialogue and the facilitation of the denuclearization process of the Korean Peninsula.”
Secretary Patrushev responded, “The Russian Federation and the ROK share the common goal of the complete denuclearization and establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. The Russian Federation will inform the ROK of the outcome of the Russia-DPRK summit as soon as possible through diplomatic channel.”
Subsequently, Secretary Patrushev elaborated on the Joint Action Plan initiated by the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. In response, President Moon mentioned, “The urgent task is to resume US-DPRK dialogue and facilitate denuclearization. The Joint Action Plan should be discussed with the United States in a sufficient manner. The Russian Federation is kindly asked to discuss the Plan with the United States thoroughly. The ROK will give full consideration of the Plan.”
Prior to the above meeting, Chung Eui-yong, Director of the National Security Office, held a ROK-Russia High Level Security Consultation Meeting with Secretary Patrushev for three and a half hours, to discuss the Korean Peninsula issue, the situation in Northeast Asia, ROK-Russia bilateral relations and other international matters in order to enhance momentum of ROK-Russia cooperation.
In the meeting, Secretary Partrushev rendered full support to the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula, and asked the ROK to play its role in the direction of successful US-DPRK negotiation to achieve the final goal of the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Both parties particularly shared the information related to the development of the negotiation on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula after the 2nd US-DPRK Summit, and shared the same view that the cooperation of related parties is important for reinvigorating the current momentum of dialogue.
