President Moon Jae-in spoke by phone to Indonesian President Joko Widodo from 4:00 p.m. at Cheong Wa Dae. During their 13-minute telephone conversation, President Moon congratulated the Indonesian President on his victory in the recent presidential election and on winning a second consecutive term in office.
President Moon noted that President Widodo’s victory reflected the fact that his policies implemented during the past five years in office produced fruitful results and that the Indonesian people could readily feel their benefits.
President Moon said that the people of Indonesia would become happier and more prosperous in the days to come under President Widodo’s unpretentious and inclusive leadership.
In reply, President Widodo expressed the hope that the two countries would be able to further develop under their special strategic partnership going forward.
President Moon noted that Indonesia is particularly special as it was the first ASEAN member state he visited following his inauguration and was where he first announced his New Southern Policy.
President Moon said he is very pleased with the fact that the two countries’ relationship is advancing to its highest level ever – bilateral relations having been upgraded to a special strategic partnership when he made a state visit to Indonesia in November 2017 and Korea later receiving President Widodo as a state guest in September last year.
The two leaders spoke highly of the fact that the two countries are closely working together on the economic front.
President Moon said he is looking forward to further developing the two countries’ special strategic partnership while continuing close communication with President Widodo.
