President Moon Jae-in spoke by phone at Cheong Wa Dae with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 7:30 p.m. today. President Moon congratulated Prime Minister Modi on his party’s victory in parliamentary elections and the successful launch of his Administration’s second-term. Today’s telephone conversation was the Indian Prime Minister’s first with a foreign head of state since he was sworn in for a second consecutive term in office.

Highly praising the recent elections that posted India’s highest voter turnout ever, President Moon extended his congratulatory greetings to the people of India who have confirmed the maturity of their democracy.

Noting that the recent election was the world's largest celebration of democracy with approximately 900 million Indians participating, Prime Minister Modi expressed his profound appreciation to President Moon for his congratulations. 

In reply, President Moon said that First Lady Kim Jung-sook had asked him to convey her congratulations and that she was touched seeing Prime Minister Modi visiting his mother right after his election and receiving her blessings. 

Prime Minister Modi sent a special greeting to the First Lady. He also highly spoke of President Moon’s leadership, saying it has become a huge driving force further deepening the special strategic partnership between the two countries.

President Moon noted that exchanges of high-ranking officials have taken place frequently in addition to the recent state visits by the two countries’ leaders. The President went on to say, “I’m looking forward to further progress in bilateral relations over the next five years. I believe Korea and India have endless potential and will become reliable partners for each other.”
