President Trump began by saying that the G7 mechanism has become rather obsolete, and does not properly reflect the current state of the world. He added that he is looking to expand it to a G11 or G12 format. President Trump sought President Moon’s opinion on this idea.
With regards to President Trump’s invitation for Korea to participate in the upcoming G7 Summit, President Moon expressed his gratitude and welcomed the invitation extended by the United States in its capacity as the host of this year’s Summit.
President Moon emphasized that he is more than willing to accept President Trump’s invitation, and that the Republic of Korea will fulfill its role in both infectious disease prevention and control as well as the economy.
President Moon noted that if the G7 Summit is held in an expanded and face-to-face format this year, it will become a milestone in the post-COVID-19 era. He also said that if a face-to-face summit is held successfully at an appropriate time, it would signal a return to normalcy and economic recovery for the whole world.
President Moon then replied to President Trump’s question by opining that the G7 framework has certain limitations in terms of responding to global problems and finding solutions. President Moon expressed his sympathy for modifying the G7 framework, and underlined his belief that inviting the Republic of Korea, Australia, India and Russia is an appropriate step.
The two leaders also discussed the idea of further expanding the G11 to G12 by including Brazil.
When President Trump inquired about the idea of adding Brazil, President Moon replied that it would be a good idea considering its vast population, economic size and geographical representation.
President Trump concurred with the view and said he would work in that direction.
During today’s conversation, the two leaders talked about the successful launch of Crew Dragon, America’s first crewed spacecraft built by a private company. President Moon said it was a very impressive feat that will inspire the whole of humanity to dream big, adding that the United States has ushered in a new era of civilian space exploration.
