The President Speaks by Phone to Prime Minister of Malaysia Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin
During their telephone conversation, President Moon spoke about choosing the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization and stressed that “As the global economy is facing immense difficulties, it is crucial to elect a leader in the trade sector with the ability and vision to restore confidence in multilateral trade and safeguard the free trade system by reforming the WTO.” The President went on to ask for Malaysia’s support for Korea’s Minister for Trade Yoo Myung-hee, who is running in the election.
President Moon added, “Minister Yoo possesses not only expertise in the trade sector but also remarkable capabilities, including political leadership. Because of this and the network she has established as incumbent trade minister, I am confident that she is the most qualified candidate to coordinate the sharply divergent interests of the advanced and developing nations and successfully carry out reform of the WTO.”
Prime Minister Muhyiddin congratulated President Moon on Minister Yoo advancing to the final round. The Prime Minister went on to say that the next WTO Director-General needs vision and leadership and that Minister Yoo has played an important role with her very impressive career and experience.
In response, President Moon expressed his gratitude and said, “I believe that, if Minister Yoo becomes WTO Director-General, she will do an excellent job fulfilling various expectations.”
From today, President Moon plans to actively support Minister Yoo by holding phone conversations with state leaders. Besides the call with the Malaysian Prime Minister, four more are scheduled with heads of state and government this week alone.
In the phone conversation with Prime Minister Muhyiddin today, President Moon said he anticipates a successful APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting under the leadership of Malaysia, this year’s chair country of the summit. In reply, the Prime Minister expressed the hope that they will be able to discuss pending bilateral issues in person as soon as the COVID-19 situation is brought under control.
