President Moon Jae-in attended the launching ceremony for the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) in the morning on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany. He pledged that Korea would donate US$10 million to the fund.
The We-Fi was established with the support of major donor countries in order to provide technological and financial assistance for female entrepreneurs or small businesses owned by women. It is expected to be listed as one of the major outcomes of the G20 Summit this year.
President Moon`s participation in the ceremony today and the announcement of the Korean Government`s plan to finance the initiative are in line with the policy goals of Korea`s new Administration that prioritizes providing support to women. At the same time, these moves reconfirm the Korean Administration`s commitment to actively participate in fulfilling the common tasks of the international community, including the expansion of women`s economic opportunities and the promotion of gender equality in developing countries.
In addition to President Moon, heads of state and government of major contributing nations were at the ceremony, including U.S. President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. President Moon talked with a number of leaders participating in the event, including IMF President Christine Lagarde.
The Korean Government intends to continue its support for the less privileged, including women living in developing countries, in the years to come while fulfilling its role as a responsible nation to achieve the common goals of the international community, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
