President Moon congratulated President-elect Biden on his election and exchanged ideas with him regarding the ROK-U.S. alliance, the North Korean nuclear issue and responses to COVID-19 and climate change.
President Moon noted, “I believe that the result of the recent U.S. presidential election reflects the high expectations of which the American people have on your long years of experience in state affairs, remarkable leadership and clear vision.”
President Moon also recalled the fact that President-elect Biden has consistently emphasized the importance of the ROK-U.S. alliance and, in particular, laid a wreath at the Korean War Memorial in Philadelphia on November 11, U.S. Veterans Day, and reaffirmed the robustness of the alliance by contributing his own article to a Korean news agency recently. President Moon expressed his gratitude to the President-elect for his strong interest in and commitment to advancing Korea-U.S. relations and bringing peace to the Korean Peninsula.
Moreover, President Moon expressed his hope that he and President-elect Biden will work closely together for the future-looking development of the ROK-U.S. alliance, as well as the denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. The President added that the alliance has served as the foundation for peace and prosperity on the Peninsula and in the region by defending such shared values as democracy and human rights over the past 70 years.
President-elect Biden said that South Korea is a linchpin of security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and that he is deeply committed to South Korea’s defense and will work as a close partner to address the North Korean nuclear issue.
President Moon and President-elect Biden came to a common understanding that the two countries will expand bilateral cooperation to address global challenges such as COVID-19 and climate change.
The President-elect said that he looks forward to working closely together with Korea for response to COVID-19, health security, the recovery of the global economy, climate change, democracy, and peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
In particular, reminding that both countries had their first COVID-19 case on the same day, President-elect Biden praised President Moon for Korea's exemplary response to the virus.
The President-elect said that the U.S. still has a long way to go to catch up with Korea’s response to COVID-19. Noting that it is fortunate that the vaccines are on the horizon, he said he will strive to bring COVID-19 under control from now until the day he is sworn in.
President Moon and President-elect Biden agreed to have an opportunity to meet in person for a dialogue at the earliest date possible following the President-elect's inauguration.
