On the first day of the G20 Summit today, President Moon attended a welcoming ceremony and the informal meeting of the Retreat session to discuss fighting terrorism.
At the first session that followed, President Moon delivered remarks as the lead speaker on economic policies of the new Korean Administration as well as the global economy and trade. At the second session, he spoke about sustainable development, climate change and energy policies.
At the Retreat, President Moon stressed that Korea understood that terrorism and violent extremism were becoming grave threats to world peace and security and, in this context, said that Korea supported the necessity for the G20 to declare its commitment to making a strong response. He also emphasized that it was necessary for G20 nations to work together to faithfully implement existing U.N. Security Council resolutions against terrorism.
The President went on to say that Korea would actively join the international community`s efforts and expand humanitarian assistance to countries that fell victim to violent extremism. The President also expressed his support for the efforts of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to enhance its capabilities to cut off all sources of funding for terrorist groups.
Moving on to the North Korean issue, President Moon said the North`s nuclear and missile provocations constituted a serious challenge not only to international norms but to peace and stability in the world. The President added that it was important for the entire international community to respond in a closely coordinated manner to resolve the issue.
President Moon proposed to encourage North Korea to quickly return to the negotiating table for denuclearization by applying stronger and effective pressure, including by U.N. Security Council resolutions.
President Moon stressed that the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula would contribute to the promotion of peace and stability not only in Northeast Asia but also in the world. He, therefore, asked the G20 leaders for their keen interest and full support and for them to collect their strength and wisdom for a peaceful resolution of the North Korea nuclear and missile issue.
