President Moon Jae-in met with Indonesian Minister of Defense Ryamizard Ryacudu for 40 minutes from 2:00 this afternoon at the Jinhae Naval Base on the southeastern coast of Korea. Defense Minister Ryacudu is visiting Korea to attend a ceremony to deliver a Korean-made submarine to Indonesia. Today’s meeting was also attended by Admiral Ade Supandi, the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, and Indonesian Ambassador to Korea Umar Hadi.
President Moon asked the Indonesian Defense Minister how he enjoyed the submarine delivery ceremony. Defense Minister Ryacudu responded by saying that he was very pleased, explaining in detail that the submarine delivered today was the first of three to be built and the last one would be assembled in Indonesia. He went on to say that all this has been possible thanks to technology transfer from Korea, adding that today’s ceremony was a historic event for that reason. He also said that he was certain that cooperation between Korea and Indonesia in the field of national defense would continue going forward on the basis of the longstanding history of bilateral defense industry collaboration.
President Moon said he was gratified at the expansion and advancement of Korea-Indonesia cooperation in the defense industry. He expressed the hope that such collaboration would go a long way toward reinforcing defense capabilities.
The President also called for Indonesia’s continued interest in the joint-development project of the next-generation fighter aircraft so that it would be successfully concluded. Noting that Indonesia was the first country to take possession of a Korean-made submarine, the President said he hoped Korea would be given another opportunity to participate in Indonesia’s second project to procure submarines following the first that had already been agreed upon.
President Moon reconfirmed that Korea would strive to develop ties with ASEAN member nations, including Indonesia, to a level on a par with those with the four nations whose interests have traditionally converged on the Korean Peninsula. The President next expressed the hope that the Governments of the two nations would further strengthen strategic cooperative relations through multilateral gatherings, including the MIKTA meeting, ASEAN+3, the East Asia Summit (EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the G20.
The President also said he hoped defense industry cooperation between the two nations would develop further to encompass collaboration in technology and educational training in addition to the purchase of weapons. Extending his greetings to President Joko Widodo, President Moon said he looked forward to meeting with him at an early date to delve into how to further promote friendly ties between the two nations.
In reply, the visiting Minister expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of the Korean side and, especially, to President Moon for taking time out of his vacation to receive them. He added that he would do his utmost in the interest of further enhancing bilateral cooperation, including in the defense industry.
