President Moon was interviewed today by CNN correspondent Paula Hancocks at Cheong Wa Dae just days before he goes to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly next week.
President Moon recalled her asking him a question about the North Korean nuclear issue during a news conference marking his 100 days in office. Ms. Hancocks began her interview by saying that she had prepared more questions for today.
Prior to the interview, the CNN correspondent congratulated President Moon on being chosen as an honoree of the 2017 Global Citizen Awards of the Atlantic Council. In response, President Moon said he thought it was not given to him as an individual but rather to the numerous Koreans who held candles on the streets throughout the freezing winter last year and into this year. The President also added that the Korean people who pulled off the candlelight revolution deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.
After the 40-minute-long interview at the reception room of the main Cheong Wa Dae building, President Moon and Ms. Hancocks moved to a different place and continued their conversation. Ms. Hancocks asked about the North Korean nuclear issue, how a son of a refugee became the President, the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and the new Administration’s aspirations.
On his way back to the office after the interview, President Moon exchanged greetings with tourists to Cheong Wa Dae and took commemorative photos with them.
The interview today will be aired tonight local time on CNN news, and the full interview will be broadcast through CNN Talk Asia on September 28.
