“The earth has grown early spring cabbage, and the people have fostered hopes.”
We are currently talking about “social distancing,” yet in our minds, we continue to move forward, sticking together, wrapping our arms over each other’s shoulders.
The Daegu Medical Center and Keimyung University Daegu Dongsan Hospital have been inundated with face masks, beverages and prepared meals donated by citizens. Private hospitals have volunteered to treat COVID-19 patients exclusively, and doctors at clinics are upholding their professionalism as “the last physician standing in the neighborhood.” Our citizens are helping small restaurants by buying up their perishable ingredients, and guesthouses are offering rooms to medical staff at no charge.
I cannot help but be left in solemn awe upon hearing the news about Daegu citizens taking care of each other regarding matters that the nation cannot address.
Large churches are practicing neighborly love by offering their retreat centers as residential treatment centers. The amount of special donations to the Community Chest of Korea has surpassed 27 billion won in less than 10 days, and one citizen contributed by cashing in a cancer insurance policy that had paid-up premiums for seven years. Another citizen sent 30,000 face masks anonymously to the community health center in Anseong. Such acts of compassion are pouring in from across the country.
Over 320 households in Daegu’s Nam-gu District, who are under self-quarantine, received early spring cabbage cultivated on Jindo Island in Jeollanam-do Province. It was a heartfelt expression of gratitude by members of the Gunnae-myeon Village self-governing committee on Jindo to Nam-gu citizens to reciprocate their recovery assistance following flooding on Jindo in 2012.
I am always moved by our people. Our society has many good-natured people. Good hearts that choose not to put self-interests first always instill hope. It does not have to be money or goods. Embracing each other with a tender heart is the very source of hope.
