(unofficial translation)
Thank you, Your Excellency Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Just as you mentioned, I am glad to see you again after our meeting at the G7 Summit. My attendance at the G7 Summit has helped the Republic of Korea firmly establish itself as a responsible member of the international community. I’d like to thank you again for the warm hospitality you extended to me at that time.
First of all, let me express my condolences on the passing of your mother, Charlotte Johnson Wahl, and extend my deepest sympathy. You once said that your mother had taught you “the equal worth of every human being.” I believe that her teaching is a valuable lesson we all must take to heart. Remembering Ms. Johnson Wahl, I pray she rests in eternal peace.
In 2008, the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to pass the Climate Change Act, and it is now at the forefront of the efforts to address climate issues. Based on the Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution announced in November last year, the country also laid the foundation for sustainable growth. I look forward to the United Kingdom setting an example to achieve growth while simultaneously responding to climate change by drawing on its potential.
The 26
th U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP26) scheduled for November will serve as an opportunity to take a step forward for the coexistence of humanity. Korea is also preparing to announce improved Nationally Determined Contributions at the Conference. Korea will always stand side by side with the United Kingdom as a partner. Today’s summit will become an opportunity for our friendly and cooperative relations to advance further. Moreover, I am grateful to you for sharing such good news with me while reporters are present.
Thank you.
