Honorable Chair, thank you.
Sustainable Development Goals have been promised by the international community. We are now striving to find ways of living that differ from those in the past and to build back better. However, we have to face up to the agonizing reality that the COVID-19 crisis has aggravated disparities.
Only when gaps between people and between countries are further narrowed will we be able to build a global village filled with solidarity and cooperation and achieve our Sustainable Development Goals.
It is crucial for G20 member countries – which account for more than 80 percent of world GDP – to take joint actions. The G20 should play a pivotal role in healthcare cooperation and set a good example for the fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. When it comes to climate crisis responses, the G20 should show more dedication and lend support that takes into account what developing countries are facing. In pursuing digital and green transitions, people-centered and fair transformations should also be a top priority. While continuing to increase its official development assistance, Korea will incorporate information and communication technologies. In particular, our green ODA will be expanded. We will strengthen cooperation with developing countries for inclusive digital and green transitions.
At the last SDG Moment in the U.N. General Assembly, I sensed how much young people around the world aspire for sustainable development. BTS participated as a special presidential envoy for future generations and culture, and the U.N.’s official web channel drew attention with over 40 million views. The protagonists for sustainable development are future generations. They are familiar with digital technology and highly sensitive to climate change and the environment. Their voices have already been heard, and they are ready to participate and create. I am confident that young people will be able to achieve what older generations could not. I’d like to see the G20 explore various means to allow future generations to become the leaders spearheading efforts for sustainable development.
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Italian Government and Prime Minister Draghi once more for organizing this excellent meeting.
Thank you.
