Honorable President Biden, European Commission President Von Der Leyen, Excellencies,
Throughout this year, the world has spurred breathlessly for “Carbon Neutrality.” And today, we have made yet another accomplishment – the Global Methane Pledge. I’d like to express my respect to the leadership of President Biden and European Commission President Von Der Leyen, who have made today’s event possible.
Now, the world will band together and cooperate more strongly with the aim of reducing methane emissions by more than 30 percent by 2030. As a signatory to the Global Methane Pledge, Korea will also strive to responsibly fulfill our commitment to cutting methane emissions domestically.
Korea has included a plan to cut methane emissions 30 percent by 2030 in our enhanced 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions goal. In addition to devising specific reduction plans for energy, waste, agriculture, livestock farming and fisheries, we are seeking ways to recollect methane from landfills and waste treatment facilities and recycle it as energy.
In addition to our domestic efforts, Korea will assist neighboring countries working to reduce their methane emissions. To help developing countries participate in methane reduction, we will share policies, experiences and technologies; provide various supports; and push for cooperation.
I hope that the launch of the Global Methane Pledge today will be remembered by future generations as a milestone of solidarity and cooperation that has helped create a green Earth.
Thank you.
