Your Majesties,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to extend my profound gratitude to Your Majesties, and the people of Sweden for the warm welcome and for kindly hosting this magnificent banquet as well as the earlier luncheon.
The last Crown Princess of the Korean Empire visited Sweden 90 years ago, and she wrote in her diary that "Sweden is a serene and peaceful country".
As I am visiting Sweden just before Midsummer, I will also remember Sweden as a "beautiful and peaceful country."
Swedish people enjoy a "lagom" lifestyle, which means being just adequate, and respect social consensus and order.
As Lindgren once quipped in her book, "wast not, want not," Swedish people love frugality.
The people of Sweden are also sharing the the peace and prosperity that they have achieved through their hard work with people from all over the world.
This is why we call Sweden the "world's conscience."
Swedish people respect Your Majesty and the Royal Family, and has rallied around Your Majesty whenever the country faced hardship.
I take my hats off to Your Majesty for your leadership, which has given Sweden the honor of being dubbed the world's conscience.
Distinguished Guests,
Sweden is a true friend who did not hesitate to reach out a helping hand in Korea's hour of need.
The special relationship between Sweden and the Republic of Korea began when the grandfather of Your Majesty, His Majesty King Gustav VI Adolf, met with the Crown Prince of the Korean Empire, Yi Un, and his wife.
When the Korean War broke out, Sweden was the first country to send a medical support unit to Korea. In the aftermath of the War, it has served as an honest broker that helped maintain peace on the Korea Peninsula where the war had still not come to an end, by serving as a member of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission.
The Korean War Memorial, which will be unveiled in Stockholm during my visit, will remind our future generations of the longstanding friendship and special ties between our two countries.
As we have cherished our friendship all along the way, it makes this year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic ties, even special.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to Your Majesty for allowing the Korean War Memorial to be constructed on the land owned by the Swedish royal family.
Sweden is an advisor and friend that we can always rely on in the process of achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula. From the inter-Korean summit in 2000 to the historic first and second summits between the United States and North Korea, it was Sweden that provided the opportunity for the relevant countries and experts to meet and dialogue.
Sweden has preserved peace for the past two centuries and has continued to develop. Today, the country has become a source of great inspiration for the Korean people who fervently desire peace. Together with my government, I have no doubt that the Swedish government and citizens will continue to play a precious role in our journey toward complete peace on the Korean Peninsula.
I hope to see the day in the near future when Sweden, which is enjoying "prosperity through peace," and the Korean Peninsula, where complete peace will reign, will move beyond common prosperity of our two countries to make joint strides toward world peace.
Now, I would like to propose a toast to peace and prosperity of both countries as well as our enduring friendship.
Skaͦl!
