Opening Remarks by President Moon Jae-in at Republic of Korea-Republic of Singapore Summit
I wholeheartedly welcome the Prime Minister on his first official visit to Korea in six years since 2013. I am pleased that I can reciprocate, however slightly, the warm hospitality the Prime Minister showed me in July last year. It is all the more meaningful for me to begin the schedule of events for the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit by holding a summit with the Prime Minister of Singapore, who is like an old friend to me.
Singapore has pooled its capabilities after adopting its “Smart Nation” strategy aimed at developing the entire country into a smart city. I’d like to express my respect for the leadership of the Prime Minister who is steering Singapore toward becoming a leader of the Fourth Industrial Revolution through a forward-looking national strategy.
Our two countries have achieved common prosperity through economic cooperation. Among ASEAN member states, Singapore is Korea's third largest trade partner and has the largest number of our construction companies operating there. Singapore is also investing a lot in Korea, and its trade with Korea makes up a high percentage of its total trade.
People-to-people exchanges between our two countries have also increased year by year, reaching a record high of 860,000 in 2018. In May this year, a direct flight between Busan and Singapore was launched, allowing more people from both countries to travel back and forth.
I would like to express my special gratitude once more to the Prime Minister and the Singaporean Government for helping achieve a milestone for peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the world by assisting with the historic first United States-North Korea summit last year and for rendering active cooperation with Korea’s hosting of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit in your capacity as the Chair of ASEAN.
Our two countries agreed in July 2018 to more closely cooperate for regional peace and prosperity and jointly usher in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. I am looking forward to substantive plans for cooperation being created in the fields of smart cities, SMEs, startups and biomedicine. I hope that our bilateral cooperation results in strengthening the capabilities of all of ASEAN.
