Honorable Prime Minister Mahathir, Mrs. Siti and members of the Malaysian delegation, I welcome you all to Korea. Selamat dating ke Korea!
It is my pleasure to reciprocate the hospitality extended to me and my wife when welcomed as the first state guest of Malaysia’s new administration. I was deeply impressed by the Korean song sung by a group of Malaysian middle school students. The Penang Bridge and Petronas Twin Towers, the symbols of our two countries’ friendship, stood solid as ever, and I also saw for myself the limitless potential for bilateral economic cooperation at the K-Wave and Halal Show.
More than anything else, I could vividly sense an integrated Asia in Kuala Lumpur where Asia’s colors, flavors and sounds flow as a single river.
Each time I see the Prime Minister, I come to deeply understand the phrase “Asia’s sage.”
Prime Minister Mahathir has imparted significant wisdom concerning the Korean Peninsula issues as well. He has also given great inspiration and support to the Korean Government’s initiative to transform the Peninsula’s Demilitarized Zone into an international peace zone. I’d like to extend special thanks to the Prime Minister.
It is not an exaggeration to say that “Malaysia, Truly Asia” has emerged together with the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister’s various titles – one of Time’s 100 most influential people of 2019, the spokesperson of Asia, founder of the Look East Policy – did not come about without reason.
The concept of East Asia, as first envisioned by Prime Minister Mahathir, and the Prime Minister’s new ideas such as the East Asia Economic Caucus and a common trading currency for East Asia have led Asia along a path toward unity while awakening its potential. I am truly delighted to join the Prime Minister, the progenitor of the “Asian spirit,” today at the finale of the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit week.
Our two countries agreed to upgrade bilateral relations to a strategic partnership to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic ties next year. Malaysia’s Look East Policy and Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 as well as Korea’s New Southern Policy and vision of an innovative, inclusive nation all pursue the same goals. When we stand together, our relations will lead to a more solid integration of East Asia, going beyond bilateral cooperation.
With the Prime Minister’s Look East Policy, the “Malay Dilemma” has been transformed into “Malaysia Boleh” (Malaysia can do it)!” When our two countries work together, upholding the Asian spirit, we will be able to prevail over the Asian Paradox – difficulties with politics and foreign affairs despite economic growth.
I believe that Asian values will help build a sustainable world.
I would like to propose a toast for the future – that our two countries will change together.
Geonbae!
Terima kasih. (Thank you.)
