His Majesty the King of the Belgians has made a state visit to Korea. Since Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium and her 258-member economic delegation visited Korea in 2017, bilateral trade has grown 16 to 17 percent annually. The King’s visit this time will contribute to making bilateral exchanges even more vibrant.
Belgium has a very close similarity to Korea in that it gained independence in the midst of competition among such major powers as France, Germany and the Netherlands and it has made progress by turning geographical disadvantages into opportunities. Belgium and Korea concluded a treaty of amity and trade in 1901. At the time of the March First Independence Movement in 1919, the Belgian ambassador to Japan sent a report back to his country saying that Koreans wanted freedom and behaved with composure and dignity. His Majesty the King of the Belgians brought this document as a gift on his visit this time.
Belgium is a friendly nation that also forged ties with Korea in blood. It was one of the first countries to recognize the Korean government established in 1948. During the Korean War, in spite of its small population, Belgium sent 3,498 soldiers to help safeguard our freedom. The then Minister of Defense Henri Moreau de Melen led Belgium's participation through the dispatch of troops at that time and resigned from his office to personally take part in the War as a Major. I would like to express my profound appreciation to the 106 Belgian heroes fallen on foreign soil, their families and the people of Belgium.
We feel close to Belgium to this day thanks to the Adventures of Tintin, the Smurfs, chocolates, beer and the Queen Elisabeth Competition for music. The strength of achieving social cohesion while sharing various languages and cultures has become a driving force leading the integration of the European Union. There are many areas from which we can learn. We will closely cooperate not only in the fields of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including biotechnology, smart cities and artificial intelligence, but also in cultural and art exchanges and the peace process on the Korean Peninsula.
Our two countries’ relations date back 118 years. I am grateful to Belgium for our long-lasting friendship, and I hope that our two countries will also work together to usher in the coming century moving toward peace and prosperity. Spring flowers in Korea have burst into bloom to welcome His Majesty the King of the Belgians and his delegation.
