(Unofficial Translation)
Today is International Women’s Day.
We recall the slogan chanted in New York 112 years ago that called for enjoying the glory of life together. Even though we are not able to get together and celebrate this day today, we are all of one mind with regard to support for women.
The courage of women who advocated the importance of observing working hours and guaranteeing women’s suffrage has helped advance democracy. This year, UN Women came up with the theme “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.” It reminds us all, not just women, of the value of equality.
Our society will become even fairer when the “small acts” to eliminate discrimination and show respect and consideration for each other in everyday life combine to make a “huge influence.”
In confronting the COVID-19 outbreak, we have also come to see that we must work with our neighbors to overcome a global problem. I now feel more acutely than ever how precious the strength that people provide through their individual positions is.
I express my gratitude and support to the women still now doing their utmost for the infectious disease prevention and control efforts, at home and in society. I hope that women will play greater roles so that we can stand together through sharing.
I feel a sense of awe when I observe people conquering their fears and taking a step forward as well today with the resolve to jointly protect everyone’s health and happiness.
I also extend my deepest gratitude to men in addition to women. Congratulations on the International Women’s Day once more.
