President Moon Jae-in and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held their first phone call on May 16, getting their relationship off to a friendly start.
Both leaders exchanged their views about bilateral relations and on issues involving the Korean Peninsula.
President Moon Jae-in said, “We have many things in common when it comes to our philosophies about managing state affairs,” comparing his presidential pledge to create change and to create a new Republic of Korea with Prime Minister Trudeau’s pledge for real change, which he has been carrying out since 2015 with ever strengthening support for middle-income groups and which has built an honest and open government.
President Moon also said that, “I`m aware that Canada has been regarded as a model country in terms of human rights and freedoms, backed by its policies that support free trade and its active acceptance of immigration and refugees.”
“I hope the Republic of Korea can share such values and further develop our bilateral relations,” he said.
Both leaders shared the common understanding for the need for a joint response to North Korea.
Mentioning Pyongyang’s missile launch on May 14, President Moon explained to his Canadian counterpart that Seoul will use all possible means at its disposal to achieve the goal of a complete nuclear dismantlement of North Korea.
Expressing his thanks to Canada for supporting Korea’s position, President Moon further hoped that Canada would continue to show active support for Seoul in the future.
Prime Minister Trudeau responded to President Moon by saying that Canada will become a confident friend for Seoul and that it would be willing to help if Seoul needs help in the international community.
Finally, President Moon invited the Canadian prime minister to visit Korea for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games next year. Prime Minister Trudeau also invited President Moon to Canada in return.
