President Moon Jae-in greeted a delegation from the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, at Cheong Wa Dae on Aug. 21. They discussed ways to address North Korean issues.
Senator Edward Markey said, “U.S. politicians on both sides of the aisle are all friends of Korea, and we will continue to stand with you to solve issues related to North Korea. We’d also like to hear more of President Moon’s advice on this matter.”
President Moon responded by saying, “While we push forward with stronger U.N. Security Council sanctions against, and pressure on, the regime, we must keep sending the message that if Pyongyang returns to negotiations and dialogue, a better and brighter future can be secured.”
“Given that the North’s economy depends entirely on trade with and aid from China, we see the role of Beijing as being crucial in this regard.”
