President Moon Jae-in and first lady Kim Jung-sook paid a visit to the Andong Hahoe folk village in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, on Oct. 6 during the Chuseok holidays.
The visit was motivated by their wish to liven up the local tourism industry and to invigorate the regional economy in the province.
During their stay, President Moon and the first lady took a tour of buildings that uphold the legacy of Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong (서애 류성룡, 西崖 柳成龍) (1542-1607), a Joseon scholar-official and a native of Hahoe.
The couple visited Yeongmogak (영모각), a museum where artifacts that once belonged to Ryu are on display, the Chunghyodang (충효당), the main house of Ryu Seong-ryong, as well as the Yangjindang (양진당), the head house of Ryu’s older brother, Gyeomam Ryu Un-ryong (겸암 류운룡, 謙唵 柳雲龍) (1539-1601).
Next, the president and first lady sat down for a luncheon with the village’s representatives, including Ryu Chang-hae, the eldest grandson in the Ryu family, and Ryu Wang Geun, head of the Andong Hahoe Village Preservation Association.
Following the luncheon, the president and first lady watched a performance of Andong’s representative mask dance, the Hahoe byeolsingut talnori (하회별신굿탈놀이).
Finally, the pair visited the Byeongsan seowon, a well-known Confucian academy built to pay tribute to the late Ryu Seong-ryong. Here, President Moon admired the ancient structure and wrote in the visitor’s book, “Ryu’s practice of restraint and prudence is the kind of mentality of which we need to take note and from which we need to learn during this day and age.”
