President Moon Jae-in and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena held summit talks in Seoul and affirmed their will to bolster bilateral cooperation in a substantial manner, at Cheong Wa Dae on Nov. 29.
President Sirisena was paying a state visit to Korea to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Seoul-Colombo diplomatic ties.
President Moon told the Sri Lankan leader that, “Both Sri Lanka and Korea share the same policy goals of pursuing a government that belongs to the people.”
“I believe our two countries can become wonderful partners in Korea`s New Southern Policy that seeks prosperity and peace in southeastern and southwestern regions, beyond the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia,” he said.
President Sirisena said, “Over the past 40 years, the Korean government has offered a lot of support for the development of Sri Lanka.”
“Starting now, we should prepare for the next 40 years and how to further strengthen the friendship between our two countries and two peoples,” said the Sri Lankan president.
The two leaders agreed to enhance exchanges between high-profile officials, especially at the government and the assembly levels. They also agreed to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, especially in economic sectors.
The two governments signed a total of five memoranda of understanding (MOUs) to bolster cooperation. These MOUs included the 2017-2019 Economic Development Cooperation Fund Program through which Korea agreed to provide USD 500 million to Sri Lanka in special loans over the next three years. The two governments also signed an agreement to establish a joint committee to boost investment, trade and tourism between the two countries. .

The two leaders spoke with one united voice concerning North Korea’s provocative firing of a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) earlier that morning.
President Moon said, “Along with other countries, our government will work as hard as possible in order to implement U.N. Security Council resolutions and North Korean sanctions in a resolute, firm manner,” while asking for Sri Lanka’s continued cooperation and support.
Expressing his support for the South Korean government in regard to the U.N. Security Council’s resolutions, President Sirisena said, “I believe President Moon’s Berlin Declaration will greatly contribute to building peace on the Korean Peninsula.”
