President Moon Jae-in has been named by Foreign Policy (FP) magazine as one of its 2017 Global reThinkers.
The news publication has been recognizing global thought leaders and public intellectuals in an annual issue, "100 Leading Global Thinkers," since 2009.
Defining 2017 as "a year of reckoning," a time when we were forced to find ways to confront a new reality, the publication featured a special list of 48 "Global reThinkers" this year, a list of the movers and shakers who defined 2017.
President Moon was named "for trying to rebuild decent democratic leadership in South Korea."
"To begin with, there was the problem of restoring public trust after the corruption scandals that wrecked the administration of his predecessor," wrote FP about President Moon, who took office in May.
"Meanwhile, the president was faced with China`s economic and diplomatic freeze in February, following Seoul`s decision to deploy the U.S.-made THAAD missile defense system. In April, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had begun to accelerate his reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons, spurring a global crisis," it added.
"Yet Moon immediately became a unifying figure," the FP said, saying that although he won just over 40 percent of the vote, his approval rate hit 75 percent in his first month. In light of the scandals that wrecked the previous administration, "Moon has pledged to run an open government," the magazine said.
The FP also highlighted President Moon`s handling of North Korea, giving credit to his "forceful push for peace" and his unwavering position on the importance of dialogue and talks with Pyongyang.
Other political figures that joined the ranks of FP magazine`s 2017 Global reThinkers along with President Moon includes: French President Emmanuel Macron, "for pulling Europe back from the brink," U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, the only black woman in the Senate, "for giving the Democratic Party hope in the Trump era," and British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, "for inspiring a new generation to re-engage in politics."
