President Moon Jae-in was awarded the Olympic Order in Gold by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for successfully overseeing the hosting of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as well as for contributing to the development of the Olympics.
IOC President Thomas Bach presented the Olympic Order to President Moon at Cheong Wa Dae on Aug. 30. Claudia Bach, the wife of Thomas Bach, Roh Tae Kang, the second vice minister at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Ryu Seungmin, a member of the IOC, and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.
The Olympic Order was established in 1975 by the IOC and has three grades: gold, silver and bronze. Previously, Korean presidents who received the gold Olympic Order have been Kim Young-sam, Kim Dae-jung and Lee Myung-bak.
