“A Cabinet that will be competent, communicative and bring about integrity.”
Lee Nak-yon was officially sworn into office as the government`s new prime minister on May 31, receiving a formal certificate of appointment from President Moon Jae-in.
At Lee`s inauguration ceremony, he stressed that, “I will supervise a Cabinet that will be worthy of being a true Cabinet. The Cabinet must be capable, communicative and geared toward national unity.”
To this end, Lee vowed to become a “prime minister who is the closest to the people, a prime minister who is the humblest in communicating with the people, and a prime minister who is the fairest.”

“The new government should be capable of getting rid of mistakes done in the past, dealing with problems that we face in the present, and braced for challenges that may come in the future,” he said. “Keeping in mind the past, present and future of Korea, I will be a prime minister who always comes forward to solve challenges that are faced daily by our citizens.”
Citing a siminyeosang (시민여상, 視民如傷) from Mencius (맹자, 孟子) (372 B.C.-289 B.C.), a passage from his writings, the prime minister continued to say, “As it says, ‘Treat your people the same way you care for the sick,’ I will be a prime minister who is humble and who always communicates with the people."
Lee stressed that, “The Cabinet should be one that always serves all the people, embracing every ideology, region and generation. I will be a prime minister who is at the forefront of treating each and every individual equally.”
President Moon Jae-in awarded the new prime minister a certificate of appointment at Cheong Wa Dae, calling on him to “be a prime minister who takes good care of the people’s livelihoods and who`s willing to reach out more actively to address their difficulties.”
“I hope you will serve the people with a sense of responsibility and determination to take care of ordinary affairs in our public lives,” President Moon said.
The prime minister replied by saying that, “I will put every ounce of my energy into winning the public`s confidence, and I will always be there to serve you.”
