President Moon Jae-in announced that his government would sternly respond to any further provocations from North Korea, as he convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) on July 4 following the North`s test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
Calling the latest test launch “a clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions,” President Moon condemned the development of nuclear weapons, saying, “It’s squarely against the constant warnings sent by the international community, including from our nation, the U.S. and China.”
“Our government will deal strongly with Pyongyang’s provocations in collaboration with the international community, all while maintaining a sound Korea-U.S. combined defense readiness based on our solid alliance,” said President Moon. “Moreover, we will mobilize all possible means, whether it be sanctions or dialogue, to play a leading and active role in dismantling the North`s nuclear weapons in a safe and secure manner.”
“During my visit to Germany and at the upcoming G20 Summit there, we will enhance international cooperation so as to address the North’s nuclear weapons issues," the president said.

President Moon called on the diplomatic and security ministries to “cooperate with our allied nations, including the U.S., to bring about sanctions concerning the latest nuclear missile launch by Pyongyang at the level of the U.N. Security Council, as well as a stern response from the international community.”
The president asked that, “The Ministry of National Defense and the ROK Joint Chiefs should examine their defense posture facing the North and stay on alert to immediately respond to any state of emergency.”
“The security situation facing our nation is now so dire that anything that could pose a threat to the nation should be dealt with thoroughly. The government and the people should keep the nation safe in unity,” he said.
