Immediately after an official welcoming ceremony for Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena who is on a state visit, Presidents Moon Jae-in and Sirisena held a one-one-one and expanded summit at Cheong Wa Dae today.
President Moon began by saying he joined all Koreans in welcoming the Sri Lankan President on a state visit to Korea in the year marking the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He went on to say he was impressed by the people of Sri Lanka who have proudly achieved democracy and economic growth by triumphing over such tribulations in history as a civil war and authoritarian governments.
Following that, President Moon strongly condemned North Korea for yet another firing of a long-range ballistic missile today, asking for Sri Lanka’s continued cooperation and support going forward.
President Sirisena expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality and said that President Moon`s election was important not only in Korea but also in Southwest Asia and around the world. The President once again thanked President Moon for his endeavors to push ahead with the New Southern Policy, especially for the efforts to enhance ties with nations in Southwest Asia and ASEAN member states.
President Sirisena also mentioned their commonalities, citing that they both were from ordinary families, pushing for similar policies and upholding similar visions.
Regarding North Korea, President Sirisena said Sri Lanka, as a member of the United Nations, was actively supporting the Security Council resolutions and the Korean Government’s stance at the international arena.
An MOU signing ceremony was held right after the summit. The two countries signed five documents and promised to strengthen economic cooperation in the months to come. The documents were a framework agreement on the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF); agreements on economic and cultural cooperation; an MOU on sending and receiving workers under the Employment Permit System; and an MOU on cooperation between the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI).
