President Moon Jae-in and First Lady Kim Jung-sook hosted a reception this evening to welcome global leaders and other dignitaries visiting Korea to attend the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
The reception was attended by some 200 key international and domestic figures, including a number of heads of state, IOC President Thomas Bach and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
At the reception, President Moon had a first meeting with Kim Yong-nam, the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People`s Assembly of North Korea.
President Moon delivered warm greetings in person to every head of state and government and their spouse present at the reception and took photos with each of them.
The MC of the reception was actress Kim Gyu-ri, who attracted much attention last year by donating her voice for the narration in a promotional video for the PyeongChang Olympics. Today`s event started with President Moon`s welcoming remarks, which was followed by IOC President Thomas Bach`s proposal of a toast, dinner and the celebratory performance.
Formal Korean food, which embraces the time-honored wisdom of Korean ancestors, was prepared for dinner. Various different kinds of dishes made with natural specialties of Gangwon-do Province were served on one plate, with each dish intended to emphasize the Olympic spirit that transcends politics, religions, races, continents and ideologies and contributes to world peace.
A special performance at the reception was given by the Kim Soo Chul Band. The band pioneered an original genre called “guitar sanjo.” Sanjo is a traditional improvisational instrumental solo genre, which the band performs with an electronic guitar. At the presentation today, a guitar sanjo, composed by singer Kim Soo Chul himself, was accompanied by samulnori, a percussion quartet derived from traditional Korean music, demonstrating the sentiment of the Korean people to the guests from around the world.
The reception went on approximately for an hour, and it was graced by the guests wishing the PyeongChang Olympics great success.
